The Surprising Successes: How self-direction best serves people frequently sidelined as “too challenging to self-direct"

Self-directed services are used by a wide range of people the majority of whom can clearly express their goals and preferences and actively participate in managing their plans. It is often thought that people with the most intensive support needs, e.g., dual diagnosis, behavioral challenges, and significant intellectual disability, cannot use self-direction. On the contrary, we’ve found that people with intensive needs can thrive using self-direction as long as they have the support of a parent or other representative. In this session 3 parents (one of whom is also a support broker), and a Fiscal Intermediary, describe how truly flexible, customizable self-direction can enable people to live meaningful lives in their communities.
